Russo Lee Gallery is pleased to present New Works, an exhibition by Tom Fawkes. Continuing his longstanding exploration of classical Italian Renaissance gardens and Mediterranean landscapes, Fawkes creates immersive compositions that draw viewers into spaces shaped by light, architecture, and memory. Working from years of travel and observation in Italy, Fawkes depicts environments that are both contemplative and transportive. His works balance architectural structure with painterly surface through intricate detail and carefully orchestrated perspective. Whether portraying the quiet geometry of formal gardens or the weathered grandeur of doors and passageways, his paintings and painted constructions evoke a timeless sense of stillness and remembrance.
An MFA graduate of Cranbrook Academy of Art, Tom Fawkes taught at the University of Oregon and the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee during the 1960s. From 1972 to 2004, he taught drawing and painting at the Pacific Northwest College of Art. Fawkes has received many awards, including fellowships from the Oregon Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as a Rockefeller Foundation Center residency in Bellagio, Lake Como, Italy. His works are included in numerous public and private collections, including those of Safeco, Microsoft, the Seattle Art Museum, and the Portland Art Museum.
