Russo Lee Gallery continues our exhibition program The Office this March – April with invited artist Lisa Myers Bulmash. Using the mediums of collage, assemblage sculpture, and altered books, Bulmash’s work emphasizes that everything has a backstory, much of it connected to race. The artist states that, “I use old stuff to make new art about issues that just won’t go away”.
Lisa Myers Bulmash is a collage and book artist who works primarily in acrylics, paper, and found objects. Informally trained, Bulmash began her career making handmade cards. After her father’s death in 2006, she felt compelled to take more personal risks in her creative life. Questions of identity, violence, and sacrifice now drive most of her work. Bulmash is a featured artist in “The Story of Art in America” docuseries. Her work resides in the city of Seattle’s art collection as well as many other municipal and institutional collections. The artist has received grants from the Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation and other arts benefactors. Her work has been included in the Seattle Times, the Washington Post, and featured on Seattle television segments.
