For the month of May, Russo Lee presents Defense Mechanisms by Laura Domela. For this compelling exhibition, Domela explores the complex ways we navigate fear. Visually, the paintings are a study in contrast, exploring emotional and psychological themes through the lens of contemporary abstraction. Bright, festive colors and floral motifs are layered over dark forms, stark geometries, and intricate line work, creating a dynamic push and pull between beauty and unease. Domela states, “Visually, I want my work to reflect this tension between vulnerability and protection – what we hide, how we armor ourselves.”
