Press Release

Also in January, the gallery is excited to feature the abstract paintings of visiting artist Audrey Tulimiero Welch. Welch’s acrylic paintings focus on the subjects of line, mapping, and place. Her use of intersecting lines, patterns, and textures combine to create dynamic compositions and her energetic use of color adds layers of dimensional complexity. Her paintings can be read as metamorphic ‘maps’ that contain in their vibrant layers embedded stories and the lived relationships of daily life. Much of her inspiration came from her time traveling the world. Welch has spent the last 15 years in Indonesia, Thailand, and Australia—five years in each place, where she would walk her city or village and get to know the landscape intimately. Welch currently resides in Tacoma, Washington.

Welch is an internationally exhibited painter who grew up in Livingston, New Jersey. She earned her BFA from the University of Delaware and her MFA from the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University. Welch’s paintings are included in numerous public and private collections around the globe, including Google, Ronald McDonald House, Perth, Western Australia, Hyatt Regency, Oman, Four Seasons Hotel, MGM, and Saks Fifth Avenue. Her work has been exhibited throughout the United States, Bangkok, Indonesia, Germany, Singapore, and Australia. Museum exhibitions include Frauen Museum, Bonn, Germany; Bade Museum, Berkeley, California; Coos Bay Art Museum, Oregon; and Museo Italo Americano, San Francisco. She was awarded a 2011 artist residency in Western Australia, and nominated for the 2010 Daedalus Foundation Fellowship in painting. Publications include Fine Art Magazine, Thailand Art and Design Guide, Architectural Digest, New American Paintings, and the San Francisco Chronicle.
