Press Release

Using new techniques and themes in oil painting and mixed media, Whitney E. Nye continues her exploration of the textures, hues, and sensations of her immediate world in Midst at the Russo Lee Gallery. Changes in the City of Portland as well as in the rest of the country are acknowledged in this body of work. The artist reflects on “the mounting pressure I feel from changes in my communities.” In the midst of historical upheaval, Nye creates paintings that explore a sense of uncertainty and change, with sometimes humorous and obtuse references.

Whitney E. Nye is a painter, sculptor and mixed media artist based in Portland, Oregon. Working in different mediums and sizes, Nye consistently examines patterns of repetition. She explores the rhythms and pauses of our natural world, the processes of entropy and renewal. Nye is a graduate of the University of Oregon, a former Artist-in-Residence at the Oregon College of Arts and Craft and was a member of the Regional Arts & Culture Council’s Design Roster from 1998 to 2002. Her work is in the collections of the Oregon Health Sciences University Foundation, Salem Hospital, OR, and the Commerce Bank in Portland, OR.
