We are pleased to present Amory Abbott’s Bloodlands, his first solo show at Russo Lee Gallery. Using charcoal on paper, Abbott explores the thematic commonalities between Gothic Romanticism, fantasy, Black Metal, and Dark Ecology. In this exhibition, the artist also connects with his recently discovered Scandinavian heritage, creating work that references Norse mythology, Viking sagas and mysterious fjords and archipelagos. These complex works on paper are melancholy wanderings through enchanted lands full of wonder, isolation, and ruin. They are persistently seeking the sublime, in the midst of seemingly overwhelming natural circumstances.
Amory Abbott uses charcoal to create large-scale drawings of craggy and forested landscapes that seem to be shifting and falling in space. He seeks to give viewers a sense of how the world might one day change in catastrophic and unfamiliar ways, but in so doing, creates drawings of great beauty and wonder.
Abbott was born in Indiana, received his BFA from the Herron School of Art & Design in Indianapolis, and his MFA from Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, OR. His work has been exhibited Portland, OR and Indianapolis, IN.
