Biography

Stephen McClelland resides in Seattle, Washington and received his M.F.A. from the University of Washington. He draws and paints boldly, covering his surfaces in layers. Influenced by the formal aspects of early 20th century artists, such as Miró and Klee, his stenciled forms and grid-like background are pushed until a spatial play evolves between these elements. His work carries a punch, produced by the saturated primary colors he uses.  He has taught at Universities including the Cornish Institute of Art, Seattle, WA; Portland State University, OR; and the University of Washington. His exhibitions include the Tacoma Art Museum, Washington; the Seattle Art Museum; the Port Angeles Fine Art Center, Washington; the Seattle Pacific University, Washington; and the Western Washington University, Bellingham, Washington.  His work is part of many public and private collections, including Bank of America, Seattle, Washington; Microsoft Corporation, Seattle, Washington; SAFECO, Seattle, Washington; Ball, Janik, Novack, Portland, Oregon, and the City of Seattle, Washington.
